This math app can be used to teach and study the equal addition subtraction method. The user can solve random or custom subtraction problems with small and large numbers. The number of digits in the numbers can be set.

The equal addition subtraction method is also called the ‘borrow and repay’ method or equal additions method for subtraction. Today the method is used in Australia and Latin America. The equal addition used to be a very popular method for subtraction in US until the middle of 20th century.

The equal addition subtraction method

The method is based upon the idea that adding the same amount to two numbers will not affect the difference between the two numbers. The process can be thought as:
- Work column by column from right to left
- When the digit of the first number is smaller than the corresponding digit of the second number, add ten to the digit of the first number and one to the digit of the second number in the next column to the left.

This math app can be used to teach and study the left-to-right subtraction method. The app is easy to use and it has an intuitive interactive interface with customizable colors and other settings. The user can solve random subtraction problems and each step is made clearer with an animation.

The Left-to-right Subtraction Method

The left-to-right subtraction method is a two-step process. In the example 936 - 581, the number to be subtracted is first written in an expanded form: 500+80+1. Each of the parts is then subtracted from the starting number. In our example 936-500=436, 436-80=356 and finally 356-1=355.

In the Everyday Mathematics curriculum the left-to-right subtraction method is one of the algorithms for subtraction.

The Partial Sums Method

The partial sums addition method is a two-step process. In the example 764 + 340, each place value is first added separately from left to right. The resulting addition 1000 + 100 + 4 produces the answer 1104.

In the Everyday Mathematics curriculum the partial sums method is the focus algorithm for addition.

The Everyday Column-Addition Method

The method is called column-addition method in the Chicago School Mathematics Project but the app is called the Everyday column-addition method to distinguish it from the standard column addition method.

The Everyday column-addition method was developed and shown to the Everyday Mathematics authors by a first grader. The method has two stages. In the first stage the digits are added one column at a time in each column. After the first stage some columns can have two-digit numbers. In the second stage the carries are done to obtain the result.

Blue Whale App Development rolled out what I believe is the natural follow up to their Speech Therapy for Apraxia app. The first Speech Therapy for Apraxia used syllables to work on phoneme production and oral motor planning skills. The new app titled Speech Therapy for Apraxia-Words works on the same skills as its predecessor but uses words in place of syllables.

Speech Therapy for Apraxia-Words is a convenient, effective tool for:
• children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech/dyspraxia
• adults with apraxia
• use by anyone working with individuals with apraxia, either therapists or parents
• can also be used for traditional articulation practice

Developed by the National Association for Child Development team including a certified speech-language pathologist, this app practices articulation at the word level and is a logical follow-up to the original syllable-based app, Speech Therapy for Apraxia. This newer version provides choices of different patterns of articulation within words and moves through a progression of levels that challenge motor planning for speech. It begins at the production of single words with easier patterns of articulation and progresses through increasingly more difficult production sequences all the way to the production of sequences of random words.

What I Would Like To See Added In Future Updates

• The ability to collect data on multiple users.

Is This App Appropriate For Students with Special Needs?
This is a great app for speech language pathologists to work with individuals with apraxia. It also would be a great tool for SLPs to introduce to parents and clients so individuals with apraxia can do additional work on days they do not attend speech therapy. The low cost makes it an affordable tool for everyone. Blue Whale has rolled out another high quality, low priced app.
